Kayla Moore: 'One of our attorneys is a Jew'
Eric Bradner, 2017
On December 12, 2017, there will be an election for the Alabama senate. This has been a very controversial election due to the sexual assault claims brought against Roy Moore, the republican candidate, by numerous women, some of whom were minors at the time of the incident.
At a rally on December 11, 2017, Roy Moore's wife Kayla Moore came up to speak. Mrs. Moore took this as an opportunity to "set the record straight"..."One of our attorneys is a Jew". Obviously her words came as a shock to many, who feel as though this was very insensitive, and only drew more attention to the bigotry of her husband.
1. What will this election mean for the Trump presidency, if Roy Moore is elected?
2. How does offensive language and attitudes towards marginalized groups effect the integrity of the government.
3. If Roy Moore wins this election, will that strengthen or weaken the Republican party in the long term.

ReplyDeleteGiven that Roy Moore lost, I am still very disappointed in the citizens of Alabama for making this a tight race. Doug Jones had 49.9% of the votes while Roy Moore had 48.2%. This is a man that has had sex scandals and been called a molester and yet he was still very close to winning. This proves a bigger problem with the GOP voters, and that is they have become so partisan in a way that they don't take into consideration whether the candidate they are supporting has had sex with girls that are the same age as their daughter. I am just very glad that Doug Jones won this election because not only did not avoid having a "Donal Tump" like politician in the senate but also the GOP majority is on thin ice with only have 51 seats now.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that president Trump distanced himself from Roy Moore following his defeat, and stopped his support. Since Roy Moore would have benefited Trump in getting support from the Senate, Moore's loss will likely have a big impact in limiting Trump's effectiveness in government. His racial comments and scandals would have likely made government look bad, and reinstate the general view by citizens that government is corrupt. As a result, his loss will likely help government in keeping some integrity and ethics.
ReplyDeleteRoy Moore represents the most radical parts of the Republican Party, but is not representative of the whole. If he were to win the election, it would strengthen the Republican presence in the Senate, but it would damage the overall image of the party. All in all, it would be a victory for Trump in the long term, but even he might not be able to defend all of Moore's words and actions.
ReplyDeleteIf Roy Moore had been elected, Trump would have gained much more support from the Senate, given that Moore is a Republican. The fact that the race between Jones and Moore was so tight worries me about some of the people that live in our country. Knowing that Moore has been involved in multiple sex scandals and allegations, yet almost won is truly saddening. Fortunately, he did not win and Trump's/Republican's influence in the Senate will not grow.
ReplyDeleteRather than strengthening or weakening the Republican Party, Roy Moore's win will make the Republican party reorganize their campaign strategies. Instead of nominating a controversial candidates, in the future, the Republican Party must ensure their candidate is not a sex offender and anti-semitic. This loss for Republicans will affect them short term since party polarization is so strong in America.
ReplyDeleteIf Roy Moore were elected, this would have had a profound effect on Trump's support from the senate, but it would have damaged the Republican party's image due to Moore's radical ideology and his sexual assault allegations. Moore's victory would have strengthened the Republican Party for the long term, but Moore's reputation as a child molester could have caused some more moderate Republicans to lose faith in their party.
ReplyDeleteIf Roy Moore were elected, I believe many people around the country would furious and protest, damaging the Republican parties reputation, and Trumps (even though it is not the best anyways). Offensive language affects the integrity of the government because it not only makes them disrespectful but also seen as unprofessional. Statements like these do not fade away quickly and damage ones reputation greatly.
ReplyDeleteIf Roy Moore were to be elected to the Senate, it would be a huge win for the Trump administration. With all the commotion going on around the GOP tax plan, another Republican to vote "I" when bill comes to a vote is a huge deal. Trump knows (or at least he thinks he knows) that Moore will fall in line with his plans for the next 3+ years. That said, if Moore were to be elected, there would be some internal conflict in the GOP because of how strong Moore's views are on controversial topics and many current voters who consider themselves "Republican" will have to rethink what that means.
ReplyDeleteIf Moore would have been elected into the Senate, it would have been a huge advantage for the Trump administration. Since Trump supported him in his elections, he would have most definitely supported Trump in Congress if he had one. However, the fact that he almost won makes me worry for the future of this country. He has been involved with many scandals and allegations, which would just make our government seem even more corrupt if he were to win the Alabama Senate position.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if this election would have much of an impact on Trump's presidency. I think it will only make the current opinion on it worse, if anything, because the fact that she says "one of our attorney's a Jew" seems like it's just more harmful because it classifies the person. But based on how the Trump's presidency currently is, I'm not sure if this election would be able to do much to the current opinion.
ReplyDeleteIf Roy Moore is elected, it will show the divide in the Republican party during the Trump era. Moore is not a traditional conservative republican and his election would show the strong divide within the party. If he is elected, it will weaken the Republican party as it will be more divided internally.
ReplyDeleteHad Moore won the election, it would have been a poor reflection on the Republican party in general and it would even further show the polarization and craziness within the party. People will even further see the division within the party and it will hurt their chances even as soon as the 2018 midterms.
ReplyDelete1. What will this election mean for the Trump presidency, if Roy Moore is elected? -- This can affect Trump in a very poor manner, it really shows how insensitive for the american population the Republican party is.
ReplyDelete2. How does offensive language and attitudes towards marginalized groups effect the integrity of the government.
- This puts a stigma of racism and bias of the government in the eye of the people
3. If Roy Moore wins this election, will that strengthen or weaken the Republican party in the long term. I believe weaken them, it will show a weakness in the party where they are still racially biased today.
Racially biased? I'm not quite sure how that related to this post...
DeleteSpeaking in hindsight, obviously, Roy Moore didn't win the election. However, I think this loss is good for the Republican party because it gave them the moral leverage to remove Al Franken and John Conyers from the Senate as well. And just to nitpick, Roy Moore was not accused of sexual assault, he was accused of statutory rape. You refer to Roy Moore as a bigot. If sexual relations with teenage girls and homophobia makes him a bigot, then by all means, but I don't think that's the right word. Finally, Roy Moore is not an anti-Semite. His wife is just really stupid.
ReplyDeleteRoy Moore's election would have shone a very bad light on the Republican party as a whole, and therefore the fact that he was not elected was most certainly for the better. He is a prime example of someone who is radically right winged, however, does not represent the majority of the party.
ReplyDeleteHad Roy Moore been elected, I do think it would have strengthened the Republican party, at least among white southerners, who composed the majority of his voter base during the recent election. The reason I think it would strengthen the party is that extreme conservatives may see his election as some sort of proof or validation for their racism, sexism, and other tendencies.
ReplyDeleteIf Roy Moore won the Alabama election, it would hurt the Republicans because it would reveal the craziness and how partisan the party has become. Furthermore, since Moore is not a traditional Republican, his victory would divide Republicans in Congress, which would hurt their party in the midterm elections next year.
ReplyDeleteIf Roy Moore won this election, it would have strengthened the Republican Party in the Senate, as it would further add to the Republican majority. This would give more of a cushion for voting, as often senators vote along partisan lines on important legislation like the tax bill. However, it would weaken the Republican party in the long term, as his well-known actions would reflect the Republican party and their values in the public's eyes.
