The Republicans aimed to have their tax bill on the president's desk by Christmas and they are almost there. In the same day Alabama lost a seat to the Democrats in the Senate, the GOP finished drafting the finial bill that will take vote in both the House and the Senate next week. Given that the vote in the Senate for the bill last week was 51-49, with one Republican voting against the bill, the vote on the final bill in the Senate may require the Vice President to step in to be the deciding factor if the majority whip cannot convince Bob Corker(R-Tenn) to vote for the bill.
According to a recent article on New York Times, here are some of the significance of the bill:
"The changes[from the draft form the House bill] included a slightly higher corporate tax rate of 21 percent, rather than the 20 percent in the legislation that passed both chambers, and a lower top individual tax rate of 37 percent for the wealthiest Americans, who currently pay 39.6 percent. But the bill will still scale back some popular tax breaks, including the state and local tax deduction and the deductibility of mortgage interest."
Questions:
1. Do you think if this bill passes it would help Republicans in 2018 mid-terms.
2. What is your thought about how partisan Congressmen have become, with not a single Democrat voting for the bill and only one Republican voting against the bill.

I think that if the tax bill passes it will help Republicans because they have had an otherwise unproductive year. The bill is popular enough among Republicans, but lacks support among Democrats and Independents. However, I also believe that , due to gerrymandering, the outcome of the election will not change much as a result of the bill.
ReplyDeleteThe tax bill would help Republicans since it would help to overshadow their failure to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Partisanship in Congress is at an all-time high, as most of the members of congress are unwilling to cross party lines. I think that Republicans started this trend when they declared that they would not support Obama-backed legislation, but Democrats have become more partisan as well.
ReplyDeleteI think it has been a strong trend in Congressmen becoming more partisan than ever, as if they both are trying to prove a point and coming off as being stubborn. This can become a greater issue, as in the future, they are not voting for their values and good for the people, but to support their party.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the tax bill will not help the republicans in the 2018 midterms because it is the sole piece of significant legislation that they have passed since Trumps inauguration and it is not widely supported by the public. It feels as though this bill was somewhat forced by Republicans in Congress to make President Trump look as though he is getting stuff done. However, it is clear this bill could lead to increased deficits and higher government spending which could hurt the Republicans come 2018.
ReplyDeleteI think that it will not help the Republicans in the 2018 midterms as it does not have a lot of support from a large portion of the public and is the only successful bill in the trump era. Many of the provisions for the middle class are not permanent and will sunrise, which will upset the public and cause for a shift in the midterms.

ReplyDeleteI think passing the bill will only hurt Republicans. Since most of their voters in 2016 will be negatively by this law, their voter base will abandon them in the 2018 midterms. This bill was forced by the Republicans to overshadow their failure to repeal Obamacare
ReplyDeleteI think that this tax bill will help the Republicans because the tax cuts concern the wealthy more. As for the partisanship, the fact that the government is partisan only makes it more partisan. If you consider this bill, by benefiting the wealthy it continues to make the Republicans more Republican, and so it will continue to make the Democrats dislike the bill more. So while the bill helps Republicans, it is continuing the problem of increased partisanship, which makes it harder to get the bill passed. Essentially, if the Republicans want they bill then to make it easier to pass they would need to make it less Republican.
ReplyDelete1. Do you think if this bill passes it would help Republicans in 2018 mid-terms. -- I cant say it will help nor be detrimental, all I know is that the Republican Party will view this as a major win for them.
ReplyDelete2. What is your thought about how partisan Congressmen have become, with not a single Democrat voting for the bill and only one Republican voting against the bill.-- Its scary to realize how adverse our government has become, not taking in the population into thought, and worrying more about their legacy as a party.
I think this tax bill will initially strengthen the core Republicans, as the tax cuts will significantly benefit corporations and the wealthy. However, I believe that the people will eventually realize that this bill will actually contribute to and increase the deficit. Thus, this bill will hurt Republicans in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI believe this new tax bill will help the Republican party in the 2018 midterms, because voters love paying fewer taxes. Additionally, Trump's ability to pass this tax bill will restore some degree of faith that the Republicans can pass legislation, and a greater level of support from Republican voters as a whole. Also, I don't understand why people are claiming that this will only benefit the very wealthy. Eighty percent of households will receive tax cuts. The tax cuts are only perceived to disproportionately benefit the rich because the rich pay most of the taxes in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI believe the bill will help Republicans with their base. However it may energize their opposition. In the balance, it's really hard to know what will be the greater force, the base being satisfied or their opposition being energized.
ReplyDeleteWe live in partisan times. Not just in the US, but worldwide. The politics in the US are not likely to become more collegial anytime soon. This partisanship is just reflective of the country as a whole. Each side believes with all their heart they are right, and no one will compromise.
I think the bill will help Republicans in the 2018 midterm. As far as conservatives are concerned, Trump kept his promises, and by the 2018 midterms, they may not realize how the tax breaks and tax deductions really affect them. However, once they find out its effects–the deficit and eventual tax increase, I believe that they may not support it anymore. Furthermore, a recent study found only 33% of Americans actually supported the GOP's proposal to reform the tax code.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this bill passing will most certainly not help republicans in the 2018 midterms because this shows a parallel to healthcare in the Obama administration, in how that hurt Obamas polls dramatically. This is if anything a more severe case because this tax bill will be so much more detrimental to the American people than health care ever was.
