Coverage Questions Swirl as Trump Cuts Subsidies - Andrew Soergel, US News &World Report, October 13, 2017

After Trump's failed attempt to repeal Obamacare, he is taking a new approach in trying to chip away at the Affordable Care Act. Trump has issued a statement stopping the cost sharing reduction subsidies authorized by the Affordable Care Act. These subsidies were designed to make coverage more affordable to lower-income Americans. However, these subsidies have been criticized and in federal court was ruled that "the payments could not be authorized without approval from Congress." This has been a constant debate between Democrats and Republicans for many years, yet no party has been able to come up with a compromise or solution to the issue. Many are afraid that losing these subsidies will continue to raise the premiums of health insurance affecting the many people that are on Obamacare. However, some Republicans are stating that it is unconstitutional to bailout these insurance companies, due to the fact that congress is in charge of the government "purse" and "how the previous administration abused taxpayer dollars and skirted the law to prop up a broken system." Despite this fact, many from both parties fear the future of health insurance due to the President's recent actions.

Questions:
1.  Do you agree with Trump's actions? If no, what could he have done instead?
2. Who does this affect the most in America?

  1. No, the repeal of subsidies only causes sectors of finance to increase. Especially since Obamacare is still in action, he weakens the system without taking it away only hurts Americans that use the system. Trump should've focused on either repealing it fully rather than destroying some of the foundation. It mostly affects those using the ACA or in broad-terms the lower middle class who cant afford proper health care.

  2. I disagree with Trump's actions because he is essentially manipulating the public's opinions for his own economic gain. By removing subsidies from the Affordable Care Act, those with serious health diseases will suffer either financially and/or physically. However, because of the misinformed public, many people are not aware of this and thus support Trump's actions. This is then an example of Trump and the media controlling information to obtain power over the people. They gain the public's favor, which could potentially pass something inhumane. Instead he could cut money from elsewhere or work on policies to improve the economy if he wants to save money.

  3. I disagree because cutting the subsidies away will lead for lower income Americans to pay higher. His actions shows that the s only interested in his personal business rather than focusing on the real issues. Many will perish and health diseases will arise and people potentially loses coverage. He should focus on another issue or impose a different way to improve healthcare, rather than diminishing important subsidies that can weaken multiple markets

  4. I disagree with Trumps actions because it puts many Americans at risk. Many people still use Obamacare and depend on it for their healthcare. Trump needs to come up with a plan and what will replace Obamacare if taken away. Therefor citizens will be reassured they will not loose their healthcare and it will be affordable.

  5. These actions of our president will affect the poorer people of our country the most. This group of people is the one that relies on ObamaCare the most and, if Trump's succeeds in what he wants, these people will be at a loss of health care and could find themselves in a very dangerous situation

  6. Trump's action will negatively affect the very Americans who he claims will benefit from cutting subsidiaries and undermining ObamaCare. Trump's action is the opposite of what he should be accomplishing. I do not agree with Trump's action because while ObamaCare is not perfect, cutting subsidiaries and repealing ObamaCare will take away the benefits American already have, leaving millions more uninsured.

  7. Making health care affordable has proved to be very significant because it aids those in the US that need it. If Trump cuts the subsidies for his own economic gain, he is ultimately hurting the chunk of the population that relies on affordable health care. I think he needs to review is decision and question how this can potentially affect the population.

  9. 1. I'd like to agree with Bora E's comment to answer Ally's proposed question: who will be affected the most? The Affordable Care Act in itself is the primary source of health insurance for many Americans today and removing subsidies would in fact risk the lives of "predetermined" diseases such as cancer patients. This is a selfish act and he needs to think of other options to reform healthcare.
